From: Dave@SaddlersCottage.net Subject: A92 @ Letham Dear Sir Many thanks
From: Balshaw,
Geoffrey [Geoffrey.Balshaw@fife.pnn.police.uk] Mr Hamilton Your query re the above has been passed to me as Traffic Management Officer for Fife Constabulary. In my opinion, the junction as laid out at present is a normal T junction (I'm ignoring the junction on the east side of the road for simplicity). The bell mouth on the south side is clearly marked on the road in white paint. The area in front of the cottages is not marked as a deceleration lane nor does it have the tapered shape of one. Being so long I believe it would also have had give way markings at the side road. I don't really know but I think that historically this area in front of the cottages was provided for the bus to stop in, as the bus stop used to be there. When a bus shelter was provided the stop had to be moved to the north side of the junction because of lack of room for the shelter at the cottages. Present thinking is that buses should stop on the road as difficulties are encountered when they try to merge back into the traffic stream from a layby. As it stands at present there is nothing to stop vehicles parking in what could be described as an open ended layby, however it is also my opinion that any parking outside the cottages also creates sight line problems for vehicles emerging onto the A92. I am also aware that BEAR Scotland are submitting proposals to the Scottish Executive to alter and improve the shape of this area which should address at least some of the safety issues, including not having to come to a virtual standstill on the main road to turn left. I hope this information is of some use to you. Regards
